history

LWL Museum of Archeology. Westphalian State Museum in Herne

A first collection of archaeological finds from Westphalia was presented in Münster in 1836 , supervised by the Association for the History and Antiquity of Westphalia, Department of Münster .

In 1908 the collection was integrated into the newly opened Provincial Museum. The archaeological department was given its own rooms in 1930 and became independent in 1934 as the state museum for prehistory and early history .

After the museum building was destroyed in bombing raids in 1943 and 1945 , a new building was erected from 1963 to 1970.

In 1980 the museum was renamed the Westphalian Museum of Archeology .

After the decision of the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Assembly to move the collection to Herne , the museum in Münster was closed in 2001.

The new building in Herne was opened on March 28, 2003. In 2007 the museum became LWL Museum of Archeology. Westfälisches Landesmuseum renamed.

building

Most of the 6,800 square meter museum is underground. Only the cube-shaped entrance building and the light halls above the two largest exhibition rooms protrude from the ground. Designed by the architects of buses folding Bruning Construction received from the Association of German Architects in NRW the Good Building Award 2003 and the Architecture Award North Rhine-Westphalia 2004 . The building is handicapped accessible and, in addition to the exhibitions, offers conference rooms on the ground floor and a cinema in the basement.

Permanent and special exhibitions

Permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition leads in a circular route through 250,000 years of history in Westphalia. The presentation is based on an archaeological excavation landscape: From finds from the last Ice Age to the present day, the exhibits are shown in chronological order in their find context. As if on a footbridge in an excavation site, the path through the museum leads visitors to various sites that are presented through replicas, pictures, films and the corresponding background noise. Typical sites such as graves, wells and building remains are shown and not only objects and their history, but also the archaeological work are presented.

Research laboratory

In a research laboratory, visitors can understand the archaeological work on concrete examples. Individual reconstructions are reproduced according to the pattern of criminal cases. Using the example of the large stone graves of Warburg , methods such as looking for traces in the ground, facial reconstruction , DNA analysis, layer excavation, age determination, material analysis and others are presented. Visitors can understand individual procedures for themselves.

Dig camp

On August 23, 2013, an excavation camp was set up in the outdoor area of the museum. The 200 square meter area is covered with a tent and thus represents a provisional excavation landscape protected from the effects of the weather. A handicapped-accessible ramp leads down into the depths and, terraced, opens up the various excavation levels, from the early modern era to the stone age. At prepared excavation sites, visitors can experience for themselves how a scientific excavation is carried out: from the careful uncovering and true-to-scale documentation of the finds to the determination and dating of the objects found. The building permit for the excavation camp is initially limited to two years.
