Ulrich Himmelmann (* before 1971 ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist . He heads the Speyer branch in the Regional Archeology Department of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE) and is a member of the Association of Regional Archaeologists .

Life

Ulrich Himmelmann studied prehistory and early history , classical archeology and European art history at the University of Heidelberg . In 1998 he completed his master's degree in relief sigillata from Rheinzabern ( Tabernae ). Already during his studies he took part in a responsible position in excavations in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg. In 2001, Himmelmann received a doctoral grant from the Baden-Württemberg State Graduate Fund. In 2005 he received his doctorate on excavations in the Roman vicus in Eisenberg in the Palatinate . Ulrich Himmelmann has been a member of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate since 2001. From 2008 to the end of 2013 he headed the information technology / EDP department in Mainz and then succeeded Helmut Bernhard , head of the Speyer branch of the regional archeology department in January 2014 .

In 2015, Himmelmann criticized the approach taken by a probe user when the Rülzheim hoard was discovered , which no longer allows the circumstances of the deposit to be reconstructed due to the unprofessional salvage. Nevertheless, he advocates increased cooperation between the state archeology in Rhineland-Palatinate and interested laypeople, provided they work closely with the monument protection authorities.
