Hermann Pfeiffer (artist)

Hermann Pfeiffer (born December 28, 1883 in Darmstadt ; † November 3, 1964 in Lützelbach ) was a German graphic artist and author .

Life

Pfeiffer studied graphics with Peter von Halm at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In 1907 he came into contact with the Wandervogel movement in Darmstadt and met Hans Breuer . From his first wandering bird journey, stimulated by the observation of herons , he brought the idea of ​​the federal symbol of the wandering bird, the German Confederation, with him, the so-called wandering bird griffin. In 1910 he became 2nd newspaper manager at the Wandervogel DB.

Pfeiffer was best known for his silhouette- like illustrations (silhouettes) for the Zupfgeigenhansl published in 1909 , the most important songbook of the Wandering Bird Movement; Pfeiffer also applies the dedication of the publisher Hans Breuer, as he played a key role in the publication of the songbook (he made contact with the printer Hohmann, with whose son he was friends). Above all in the Darmstadt area (southern Hesse) he is also known for an edition of the local posse Datterich which he illustrated and which appeared in several editions.

In 1958 Pfeiffer was honored with the bronze plaque of the city of Darmstadt and the Goethe plaque of the state of Hesse for his achievements .
