Otto-Herman Frey

Otto-Herman Frey (born September 1, 1929 in Berlin ) is a German prehistoric scientist .

Life

Otto-Herman Frey was born as the son of the ministerial official Herman-Walther Frey and studied prehistory , classical archeology and ancient history at the University of Freiburg . He received his doctorate there in 1957 with a thesis on an Etruscan bronze beak jug in Besançon (I) and the import of Etruscan bronze beak jugs in Central Europe (II) . This was followed by a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute until 1958 . Then Frey became a research assistant at the Prehistory Department of the University of Marburg . With the work The Origin of Situla Art. Studies on the figuratively decorated toreutics by Este , he completed his habilitation in Marburg in 1964. In 1970 he was appointed to the chair for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Hamburg , and from 1976 until his retirement in 1996 he taught as a full professor for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Marburg.

Frey is a specialist in the Hallstatt and early La Tène periods , Etruscan imports to Central Europe and the art of the situla . He carried out excavations in Spain, Slovenia and Italy, among others. He is a member of the German Archaeological Institute , the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Etruschi e Italici , the British Academy (1990), the Historical Commission for Hesse (1978), the Prehistoric Society in London and since 2000 an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy . In January 2020, Frey received the Goethe plaque , the highest award from the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art.
