Herman-Walther Frey

Herman-Walther Frey (born March 26, 1888 in Berlin-Schöneberg ; † April 28, 1968 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German administrative lawyer , musicologist and art historian .

Life

Frey was born as the son of the Berlin art historian Carl Frey (1857-1917) at 17 Maaßenstrasse. As a child he developed a keen interest in art-historical and music-historical topics through his father. After studying law, he worked for the Reich Finance Administration from 1920 to 1935. In 1930 he joined the NSDAP , and in 1933 also the SA . In addition, he became a member of the German Christians . From 1935 to 1945 Frey was a consultant in the Science Office of the Reich Ministry of Education , where he was able to influence numerous academic careers. Within the ministry, he was in charge of music and theater studies, prehistory and early history, oriental studies and art history as well as Protestant and Catholic theology.

After the war ended, Frey was interned in the American camp in Altenstadt near Schongau in Bavaria from August 1945 to November 1946. Then he lived as a retiree and hobby researcher in Freiburg. In his arbitration chamber proceedings in 1949 Frey was finally classified as a "fellow traveler".

Frey was the father of the prehistorian Otto-Herman Frey .
