Carl Frey

Carl Frey , also Karl Frey , (born November 26, 1857 in Berlin ; † March 11, 1917 there ) was a German art historian .

Life

Carl Frey visited the Frederick High School in Berlin and then studied at the University of Berlin , where he 1881 in History of the Middle Ages with the work The fates of the royal good in Germany under the last Staufer doctorate was. With the support of Herman Grimm , he completed his habilitation there in 1883 in art history with a work on the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. From autumn 1885 Frey temporarily taught art history at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , but in the spring of 1887 he returned to the Berlin University as an associate professor for art history, where he taught until his death.

Already in his habilitation, he showed his approach to dealing with Florentine Renaissance art : researching the sources. Subsequently, he dealt with the artists' works of Giorgio Vasari , Antonio Billi and Anonimo Magliabechiano , but also with the painterly work of Giotto di Bondone . Then he turned mainly to the work of Michelangelo .

His eldest son was the administrative lawyer Herman-Walther Frey (1888–1968).
