history

The institution for the poor, labor and education for the upper Emmental 1784

The origins of the foundation go back to an institution for the poor, work and education for the upper Emmental , which was opened in 1784 on the initiative of Gottfried Friedrich Ith, governor of Trachselwald , near Langnau in the Emmental. In 1812 the institution was relocated to its current location; it already offered space for 500 residents. In 1848 it was taken over by the Canton of Bern as the state institution for the poor, the disabled and the infirm and became the model for other institutions in Frienisberg , Kühlewil , Riggisberg , Utzigen , Wiedlisbach (Dettenbühl) and Worben . After the female inmates were relocated to Hindelbank Castle in the 1860s , the state institution was completely closed in 1891, but from 1897 it was continued by a cooperative founded by the municipalities of the Signau district .

From 1923 to 1927 the institution was completely rebuilt, designed for around 350 residents. From 1963 the main facility building was replaced by individual resident houses, and on May 15, 1970 the new Bärau nursing home was opened. In 1992 the cooperative became a foundation and the name Bärau nursing home was changed to Bärau home . Between 2004 and 2007, all the houses were renovated and most of them were demolished and rebuilt.

In 2012 the name was changed from Heimstätte Bärau to Stiftung Lebensart - based in Langnau in the Emmental . A year later, the Lebensart Foundation took over the Hotel Orchidee in Burgdorf and the Balance dormitory in Oberburg. The sbe Wegmatte Foundation in Trubschachen became Lebensart Trubschachen in 2016 , and the Riedli retirement home was taken over by the Lebensart Foundation in 2017 and renamed “Lebensart Aarwangen”.
