life and work

Spiritual partnership with Romain Banquet

Marie Cronier went to school at Notre-Dame de Jouarre Abbey . In 1874 she met the Benedictine monk Romain Banquet from the Pierre-Qui-Vire Abbey , who became her spiritual director and in 1875 made her a vow of chastity. On January 29, 1883, she had a mystical experience in which she felt invited to start a new Benedictine foundation. She traveled to Rome and got the encouragement of Pope Leo XIII. a. Banquet supported them in the project. He was ready to act as a co-founder of a double monastery and found his home town of Dourgne in the Tarn department as the place of foundation .

Abbess in Dourgne

From the beginning of 1889, Marie Cronier and some like-minded people did the novitiate with the Benedictine nuns of Saint Louis du Temple in Rue Monsieur in Paris, founded by Louise-Adélaïde de Bourbon-Condé . They traveled to Dourgne via the Sainte-Cécile Abbey (in Solesmes ) and Rocamadour , where they made their profession on September 24, 1889 in the village church . Marie Cronier was elected prioress . The construction of both monasteries, the male monastery of Saint-Benoît and the female monastery of Sainte-Scholastique, began in the district of En Calcat in two different places . Both monasteries were elevated to abbey in 1896. Marie Cronier was abbess for 40 years until her death. She saw the consecration of the church in 1927 and, from 1921 to 1934, founded the subsidiaries Maria Mediatrix and Sankt Wivina in Affligem- Hekelgem (Belgium), Santa Scolastica in Civitella San Paolo (Italy) and Madiran Monastery (today the Benedictine Abbey of Pesquié in Serres-sur-Arget ). In Dourgne, a street is named Marie Cronier.
