Bärau home
The Bärau way of life (formerly Heimstätte Bärau ) is a large dormitory for the elderly as well as the physically and mentally handicapped in the village of Bärau , Langnau im Emmental , Canton Bern , Switzerland .
Its origins go back to an institution for the poor, work and education for the upper Emmental , which was opened near Langnau in 1784 on the initiative of Gottfried Friedrich Ith, governor of Trachselwald . In 1812 the institution was relocated to its current location; it already offered space for 500 residents. In 1848 it was taken over by the Canton of Bern as the state institution for the poor, the disabled and the infirm and became the model for other institutions in Frienisberg , Kühlewil , Riggisberg , Utzigen , Wiedlisbach (Dettenbühl) and Worben . After the female inmates were relocated to Hindelbank Castle in the 1860s , the state institution was completely closed in 1891, but from 1897 it was continued by a cooperative founded by the municipalities of the Signau district .
From 1923 to 1927 the institution was completely rebuilt, designed for around 350 residents. From 1963 the main facility building was replaced by individual resident houses, and on May 15, 1970 the new Bärau nursing home was opened. In 1992 the cooperative became a foundation and the name Bärau nursing home was changed to Bärau home . Between 2004 and 2007, all the houses were renovated and most of them demolished and rebuilt according to the Minergie standard.
In 2012, Heimstätte Bärau was renamed the LebensART Foundation based in Langnau. One year later, the Hotel Orchidee in Burgdorf and the Balance dormitory in Oberburg were taken over. In 2016, the sbe Wegmatte in Trubschachen becomes LebensART Trubschachen. Since 2017, the Riedli retirement home has also been part of the Lebensart Foundation and is renamed "Lebensart Aarwangen."
