Ruggiero Giovannelli (* around 1565 in Velletri ; † January 7, 1625 in Rome ) was an Italian singer, conductor and composer .

Life

Giovannelli is said to have been a student of Palestrina , but no evidence is available. After he had previously worked as Kapellmeister at various churches, he was given the position of Kapellmeister at the Cappella Giulia at San Pietro as successor to Palestrina in 1594 , and from 1599 he worked as a singer and Kapellmeister at the Capella Sistina . He lived and worked in Rome until his death in 1625.

In addition to numerous sacred works of a more conservative style, he created a series of motets , madrigals , villanelles and canzonets, which, although they reveal the influence of Palestrina, nevertheless show an attempt to go beyond his own musical style; he is therefore not only to be seen as an imitator of his possible teacher.
