Ernst Johann

Ernst Johann (born December 23, 1909 in Schifferstadt ; † April 1, 1980 in Groß-Gerau ) was a German writer and journalist ( pseudonym Jakob Dennhardt).

Life

Ernst Johann was the second oldest of nine children of a butcher family in Schifferstadt (Palatinate). After graduating from high school, he studied literary and art history, sociology and economics in Heidelberg , Leipzig and at the Sorbonne in Paris . He was an "apprentice" at the 1936 closed "Speyerer Zeitung". He received his doctorate in 1935 on "The German book publishers of naturalism and neo-romanticism" and was a freelance journalist in Berlin until 1936 . a. for the Berliner Tageblatt and Die Dame . After a short time as an editor at the “Allgemeine Zeitung” in Nordhausen (Harz), he designed the feature section of the Kölnische Zeitung with Gerhard F. Hering . Johann was drafted into the military in 1943 and released from American captivity in 1945.

As early as 1946 he published poems by Heinrich Heine , French poems and letters by Stendhal in Oswald Dobbeck Verlag (Speyer) . A publication "Was ist Demokratie" appeared in 1947. From 1946 to 1948 he was editor-in-chief of the newly founded Die Rheinpfalz . Then he was in charge of “Das Kulturelle Wort” at what was then Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden . From 1952 to 1956 he worked as editor-in-chief at S. Fischer Verlag in Frankfurt am Main . A period of freelance work as a columnist and filmmaker followed.

He was the first television critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . For the Gutenberg Book Guild he published a Goethe, a Schiller and a Lichtenberg edition, as well as the successful Rowohlt monograph on Georg Büchner .

From 1960 to 1978 he was Secretary General of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt . As a member and temporary treasurer of the German PEN , he maintained contacts and friendships with the writers of his time. His literary knowledge was inexhaustible and his advice was valued by the then Federal President Walter Scheel . Ernst Johann was a "homme de lettre" all his life. In 1980 Ernst Johann died in his house in Groß-Gerau . He was married and has two daughters who live in Nauheim and Berlin .

Awards and honors

Ernst Johann was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit First Class and the Johann Heinrich Merck Honor of the City of Darmstadt .

Ernst Johann Literature Prize

In September 2011, the city council of Johann's birthplace Schifferstadt decided to award an Ernst Johann Literature Prize every three years , endowed with 2000 euros. The first award ceremony took place in 2012. Suggested authors who publish in German and who do justice to Ernst Johann's literary work will be considered.
