Max Bach (publisher)

Max Bach (born April 25, 1915 in Offenbach am Main , † January 17, 2006 in Darmstadt ) was a German publisher . He was co-owner, publisher and managing director of the Darmstädter Echo .

Life

Max Bach was born in Offenbach in 1915 as the son of a worker. After elementary school he learned the profession of typesetter in a social democratic newspaper from 1929 . In 1933 the newspaper was closed and Max Bach was banned from the employment office by the National Socialists because of "political unreliability". From 1933 to 1935 he studied at the Offenbach School of Applied Arts . For a year he initially worked at the HC Brüning Lithographic Art Institute in Hanau as a department head. From 1937 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and was there with the heavy motorized field artillery . After his release from captivity in 1945, Bach initially worked for the Frankfurter Rundschau and then went to the Darmstadt Echo , which was founded in November 1945, as operations manager . There he became co-owner, publisher and managing director in 1950 .

Max Bach led the Darmstädter Echo to the largest daily newspaper in southern Hesse and was still active in the publishing house until shortly before his death. Max Bach retired as active managing director in 1990. His son Hans-Peter Bach continued to run the publishing house as the sole managing partner until 2015, after the other son Horst Bach died in 2009.

Bach's social commitment was close to his heart, so he founded a "Darmstadt community foundation", was active in the municipal prevention council of the city of Darmstadt and supported the local drug aid with financial means.

Max Bach died in Darmstadt in January 2006 at the age of 91.

Honors

Max Bach was awarded the Silver Merit Plaque of the City of Darmstadt, the Johann Heinrich Merck Honor of the City of Darmstadt (1975) and the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal (1980), as well as the Great Cross of Merit (1979) with a Star (1985) of the Federal Republic Germany excellent.
