Uerzell is a district of Steinau an der Straße in the Main-Kinzig district in East Hesse . The Klesberg settlement belongs to Uerzell .

Geographical location

Uerzell located in the north of the Main-Kinzig district, about 11 kilometers north of the main town of Steinau in the valley of Ürzeller water , a tributary of Steinau Bach . Uerzell borders in the northeast on the place Hintersteinau , in the southeast on the place Kressenbach , in the south on Steinau , in the southwest on the place Ulmbach and in the north-west on the place Neustall .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1289 under the name Urcele . A brook named Urcelnaha is mentioned as early as 900.

Around 1337, the noble family von Mörle built a small moated castle on site. Small remnants of this moated castle are still there, but built into a modern house and thus almost invisible. In 1357 Henz von Mörle, known as Beheim, took the Fulda Castle he had built as a fief. Balthasar Philipp von Mörle, called Böhm zu Urtzell, married Sybilla von Ebersberg (1578–1622) from the Rhön as a second marriage in 1604 ; with his death in Uerzell in 1638, the male line died out.

In 1684 and 1699 Fulda bought the house from the Thüngischen heirs and in 1699 relocated the office of Ürzell here.

Reorganization

On December 31, 1971, Uerzell was incorporated into the neighboring municipality of Ulmbach as part of the regional reform in Hesse . This was today on 1 July 1974 in the city of Steinau "Steinau" incorporated . For Uerzell, a local district with a local advisory board and a local mayor was set up.

economy

The largest employer in town is the company Alsa, a manufacturer of shoe parts, founded in 1945 by Alfons Saum in Uerzell . Production began with the manufacture of shoe heels. The company was bought by Continental AG in 1968 . In 1989 it was resold to the shoe manufacturer Birkenstock , whose main supplier is Alsa. In August 2013, the management announced that the entire operation would be relocated to Görlitz in 2014 , where the company has had a second plant since 2009. 280 employees would have been affected by the move. Since June 2014 it has been clear that this could be averted through the cooperation of the tariff partners: For ALSA, the new strategy means production at two locations: In Görlitz, industrial mass production is being expanded. In Steinau-Uerzell, mainly small series and prototypes are to be produced and development projects implemented. In perspective, 160 to 200 jobs can be secured until 2019 at least.
