description

Freigericht-West is the third largest lake in the Main-Kinzig district and is located between Großkrotzenburg and Kahl. It is the west lake of the two Freigericht lakes. The state road 3308 (formerly federal road 8 ) separates it from the lake Freigericht-Ost (Baltic Sea). The 19  hectare lake belongs to the Kahler Seenplatte . The greater part, about 13 hectares of the water surface, is in Hessian territory. Before the start of the dredging work, there was a swampy area at today's place of the lake , through which the Weihergraben ran towards the Schifflache .

The lake emerged from an open-cast lignite mine , the "Grube Freigericht-West", which was in operation from 1925 to 1940. The pits "West" and "East" enlarged so that both became one large, connected pit. The enormous lowering of the groundwater level also damaged the adjacent Schifflache moor. When the mining of the existing lignite became uneconomical, production was stopped and the Freigericht mine was left to its fate. Since the inflowing groundwater was no longer pumped out, the system was completely filled with water in 2 years. For restoration an overflow created to Schiffslache, but suffered a defect in the following years. As is not unusual for former pits, the banks drop very steeply. Even today, the two open-air lakes are connected to each other by a pipe underground. In 1959 the “Spessartblick” lido was opened.
