The Schifflache is a right tributary of the Main near Hanau - Großauheim in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse . The major part of the water passes through an under conservation property Bruchwald at Grosskrotzenburg . The Main used to flow in this marshy alluvial forest .

The shipping area is being built in the nature reserve of the same name, north of the Freigericht-West lake between State Road 3308 (formerly Bundesstraße 8 ) and Großkrotzenburg , about 160 m from the state border with Bavaria . She draws a bow around Großkrotzenburg and steps out of the forest. It then crosses under the Main-Spessart Railway and flows between the Staudinger power station and the L 3309 in a north-westerly direction to Großauheim . The boat area crosses the road between Großkrotzenburg and Großauheim and the driveway to the Limes Bridge (K 859). It still flows above ground through a few gardens and finally flows into the Main near the clubhouse of the rowing society "Möve", which is now underground through a pipe .

The Großauheimer Schifflache nature reserve near Großauheim was placed under nature protection in 1953. This ordinance was repealed in 1976 and nature conservation was re-established in 1990.

The Altmainbogen is part of a whole system of bayous , the Main after emerging from the hilly landscape by strong meandering created and frequent run change in the Lower Main level. The old course, which is now silted up and muddy, has cut into the sand and gravel deposits to a depth of around 4.5 m. In the past, the shipping area was known as the "Großkrotzenburger Moor" and as a peat quarry. In 1865 the peat mining ended, which contributed to a small prosperity. It was designated as a nature reserve with a size of 15 hectares as early as 1953 . The area of today's Natura 2000 protected area is 61 ha.

By building drinking water wells, the groundwater level was lowered so much that many rare animal and plant species died. It was only through targeted rewetting measures that it was possible to raise the groundwater level in the ship's area again and thus stop the extinction of species . There have been new deep wells since 2014.

In the nature reserve with its alder forests , sedge and with reed covered wetlands and wet meadows are great crested newt , garlic toads , deciduous and jumping frogs , storks , Broad-leaved seasoning and salamanders before.
