The lake Freigericht-Ost , also called Kahler Campingsee or Baltic Sea , is a quarry pond near Kahl am Main in the district of Aschaffenburg in Bavaria . It is often incorrectly called just Kahler See, but this is the Nachtweidesee to the southeast.

description

Freigericht-Ost is the third largest lake in Lower Franconia and is located north of Kahl. It is the Baltic Sea of the two Freigericht lakes. The state road 3308 (formerly State Road 8 ) separates it from the lake Freigericht-West (West Lake). Some areas on the lake are privately owned. It is 29  hectares and belongs to the Kahler Seenplatte . To the north the Weihertannensee borders directly and behind it the Schloßsee and the Lindensee . Before the start of the dredging work, there was a swampy area where peat digging was carried out at today's location of the lake . The Weihergraben ran through this area in the direction of the Schifflache .

The lake emerged from an open-cast lignite mine , the "Grube Freigericht-Ost", which was in operation from 1928 to 1932. The pits "East" and "West" enlarged so that both became one large, connected pit. When the mining of the existing lignite became uneconomical, production was stopped and the Freigericht mine was left to its fate. Since the inflowing groundwater was no longer pumped out, the system was completely filled with water in 2 years. From 1937 to 1956 it served the Kahl community as a gravel pit . As is not unusual for former pits, the banks drop very steeply. Even today, the two open-air lakes are connected to each other by a pipe underground. Camping began in 1959 .

Today the campsite is the largest leisure center in the region with over 800 permanent parking spaces and 40 tourist sites .
