The Emma-Süd lake , also known as Hornsee , is a quarry pond between Großkrotzenburg in the Main-Kinzig district and Kahl am Main in the Aschaffenburg district . It was built as an open-cast lignite mine at the beginning of the 20th century . The state border between Hesse and Bavaria runs through the lake .
description
Lake Emma-Süd is located on the right bank of the Main , southeast of Großkrotzenburg and west of Kahl am Main. The twelve- hectare lake is part of the Kahler Seenplatte . The greater part, about ten hectares of the water area, is in Hessian territory. The Kahl runs in the east and south of the lake .
In 1925, after the First World War, the Emma-Süd mine was built to mine lignite . To do this, the river bed and the mouth of the Kahl had to be relocated to the south in 1927. Its previous course corresponds to today's border through the lake. On March 10, 1914, the Main had severe flooding that entered the pit. This resulted in an enormous drop in the level of the Main, so that a ship lying near Seligenstadt ran aground. After the break-in point, on a former branch of the Kahl, had been sealed off by sheet piling , the water could be pumped out.
Immediately to the west of Lake Emma-Süd is the lowest point in Bavaria at 102 m above sea level. NN . The lake is completely fenced and not accessible. The state road 3309 separates the lakes Emma-Süd and Emma-Nord .
