Hartwig Gernandt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hartwig Gernandt (born July 5, 1943 in Waltershausen ) is a German physicist and polar researcher . In 1975/76 he managed the construction and scientific operation of the first German Antarctic station (from 1987 Georg Forster station ) and in 2009 the construction of Neumayer Station III . Scientifically, he deals with atmospheric research and made significant contributions to the exploration of the ozone hole .

Life

Gernandt was born in Waltershausen, Thuringia , in 1943 . In 1962 he passed his Abitur at the Salzmann School there and then studied physics at the University of Rostock . He wrote his diploma thesis at the observatory for ionospheric research in Kühlungsborn . He then took part in the 13th Soviet Antarctic expedition and wintered in 1968 in the Mirny station , where he carried out radio and satellite measurements to research the D-layer of the ionosphere . In 1971 he received his doctorate from the University of Rostock with a dissertation on ionospheric anomalies in high geomagnetic latitudes . He then became a research assistant at the Lindenberg Aerological Observatory .

After the GDR joined the Antarctic Treaty in 1974 , Gernandt led a six-person German team from 1975 to 1977 as part of the 21st Soviet Antarctic expedition. On April 21, 1976, the first permanently manned German research station in Antarctica was opened in the Schirmacher Oasis near the Soviet Novolasarewskaya Station , which was named Georg Forster Station in 1987. The scientific program pursued here in the following years was co-designed by Gernandt. The regular ozone soundings begun in May 1985 and continued to this day received special recognition . For the first time it was possible to describe in detail the vertical extent and the temporal course of the ozone hole in the lower stratosphere .

From 1992 he continued his research as head of the working group “Polar Atmospheric Research” at the Potsdam branch of the Alfred Wegener Institute . The focus of his ozone research was now on the physical and chemical processes in the arctic stratosphere. In 1998 Gernandt took over the management of the logistics department at the parent institute in Bremerhaven . Until 2009 he was responsible for the technical operation of the German research stations in the Arctic and Antarctic and the use of the institute's research ships , aircraft and vehicles. He was also responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of Neumayer Station III on the Ekström Ice Shelf , which went into operation on February 20, 2009.

Hartwig Gernandt wintered twice in the Antarctic and took part in 12 summer expeditions. "In recognition of his pioneering scientific contributions to German polar research, in particular the first description of the altitude and temporal distribution of the Antarctic ozone depletion, as well as his outstanding commitment to the construction of the Georg Forster station and the creation of important logistic platforms in the Antarctic" the German Society for Polar Research awarded him the Weyprecht Medal in 2018 .
