The Novolasarevskaja Station ( Russian Станция Новолазаревская ; also simply Novolasarewskaja; English transcription Novolazarevskaya; colloquial abbreviation Novo) is a Russian (formerly Soviet ) polar research station in the Antarctic . It was opened on January 18, 1961 as part of the 6th Soviet Antarctic Expedition.

location

The station is located in the eastern part of the Schirmacher Oasis in Queen Maud Land . In the north of the station, the Lazarev (Novolasarewskaya, Nivl) ice shelf extends about 80 km to the Riiser Larsen Sea (the Lasarew Sea is further west). The inland ice south of the Schirmacher Oasis already reaches heights of 1500 m at a distance of 50 km. The next station is the Indian research station Maitri, 5 km away.

history

On March 10, 1959, the Soviet Union built on the Lazarev Ice Shelf about 100 kilometers northeast of the current station at 69 ° 58 '0 "  S , 12 ° 55' 0"  O the research station Lazarev. It was named after the Russian admiral Mikhail Lazarev . The station was moved to the oasis in 1961 and was named Novolasarewskaya (i.e. New Lazarevskaya ).

In 1961, the ward doctor Leonid Rogozov performed an appendectomy on himself in the ward.

crew

The maximum occupation of the station is up to 70 people in summer. In winter, an average of 30 scientists and technicians work in Novolazarevskaya Station.

research

1964/65 the crew of the station to scientific projects took the occasion of the quiet Sun International Year part. At Novolasarewskaja, a series of measurements were carried out on the aurora borealis , the ionosphere , the earth's magnetic field and meteorological conditions to investigate the influence of solar activity on the earth during a sunspot minimum .

The scientific research at the station currently includes the fields of geodesy , glaciology , limnology , geomagnetics , geology , biology , seismology , meteorology and other specialist areas. A monitoring station of the SDCM system is located on site .

logistics

Novolasarewskaja has a landing and take-off runway on stable blue ice . Since 2002 the organization DROMLAN (Dronning Maud Land Air Network) has been conducting scientific and commercial flights with an Ilyushin 76TD from Cape Town to the Novo Airfield (Novo Runway) at Novolasarewskaya station. The operator of the flight connection is the Antarctic airline Antarctic Logistic Center International (ALCI). Novolasarewskaja is one of the entry and exit points for Antarctic logistics. From here, the German stations Neumayer and Kohnen as well as Halley , SANAE-IV , Troll and the Japanese Shōwa station are served.

The station was the starting point for the television production Wettlauf zum Südpol in December 2010 .
