Mikhail Lazarev ( Russian Михаил Петрович Лазарев , scientific. Transliteration Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev ; * 3 . Jul / 14. November  1788 greg. In Vladimir ; † 11 jul. / 23. April  1851 greg. In Vienna ) was an Admiral of the Russian Navy .

Life

After graduating from cadet school , he completed an internship with the British fleet from 1803 to 1808 . After his return he served in the Russian Baltic Fleet . From 1813 to 1816 he undertook his first world tour with the Suworow , during which he discovered the Suwarrow atoll named after his ship .

During the first Russian Antarctic expedition from 1819 to 1821 under the direction of Bellingshausen , in the course of which the Antarctic continent was discovered, Lazarew was the commander of the frigate Mirny . Just one year after his return, Lasarev undertook his third trip around the world from 1822 to 1825 with the frigate Kreisser . As the commander of the Azov liner , he distinguished himself in 1827 at the naval battle of Navarino against the Turks and Egyptians and was appointed rear admiral .

From 1833 until his death, Lazarev was the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and Black Sea ports, as well as the military governor of Sevastopol and Nikolayev . Meanwhile appointed Vice Admiral, he landed with Russian troops in Zemess Bay in September 1838 and built a fortress there , from which the port city of Novorossiysk later emerged. He was appointed admiral in 1843.

Lazarev was buried in the Vladimir Cathedral in Sevastopol after his death .

Several geographic places were named after Lazarev, including one to the Tuamotu archipelago belonging Atoll in the South Pacific (now called Mataiva ), an island in the Aral Sea , a bay and a port in the Sea of Japan , a marginal sea of the Southern Ocean in front of the Queen Maud Land ( Lasarew Sea ) and also in Queen Maud Land the Lasarew Ice Shelf , a bay between the Alexander and Rothschild Islands in the Bellingshausen Sea ( Lasarew Bay ) and the Lasarew Mountains in northern Victoria Land in Antarctica .
