Lazarev Island is an island in the South Georgia archipelago in the South Atlantic . It is the northernmost of the Kupriyanov Islands and is northwest of the entrance to Diaz Cove .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2009. It was named after Mikhail Petrowitsch Lasarew (1788-1851), commander of the frigate Mirny in the first Russian Antarctic expedition (1819-1821) under the direction of Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen .
