Claude Martin (diplomat)

Claude Pierre Marcel Martin (born September 24, 1944 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye ) is a French diplomat. From April 1999 to September 2007 he was Ambassador of the French Republic to Germany.

Life

Claude Martin began his diplomatic career as a Legation Councilor in the Foreign Ministry . In the following years he was mainly entrusted with questions relating to European cooperation. His first assignment abroad was from 1979 to 1984 as envoy at the embassy in Beijing . From 1984 to 1986 he worked in Brussels in the Representation of France to the European Communities as its Deputy Head. When he returned to Paris, he headed the Asia and Pacific Department at the Foreign Ministry until 1990. From 1990 to 1993 Claude Martin held the position of Ambassador of the French Republic to China. He then worked until 1998 as Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In April 1999 he began working as the French ambassador to Germany. The reopening of the French Embassy on Pariser Platz fell during his term of office . He stayed in Berlin until September 2007. He was succeeded by Bernard de Faubournet de Montferrand . Back at the Paris Foreign Ministry, Martin was President of the Conseil des Affaires Etrangères before he was appointed judge at the French Court of Auditors .
