The French Embassy in Germany is the diplomatic representation of France in Germany . The embassy building is located on Pariser Platz 5 in Berlin district center of the district of the same . Anne-Marie Descôtes has been the ambassador since June 2017 .
history
From the establishment of the German Empire in 1871 until the end of the war in 1945 , the embassy was located in the Palais Beauvryé , which was destroyed in the Second World War , in the same place as it is today. After that, France exercised power as a member of the Allied Control Council in Germany. To restore German sovereignty in 1955, instead of the Allied High Commission , a French embassy was established at the seat of the federal government in Bonn .
After the diplomatic recognition of the GDR by France in 1973, the embassy in East Berlin was located on 40 boulevard Unter den Linden between Friedrichstrasse and Neustädtischer Kirchstrasse. The building was built in 1907–1908 for the Wagons-Lits sleeping car company and is now under Monument protection. After German reunification, it was used until the new building at the old location.
The current embassy building was built between 2001 and 2002 according to plans by the Parisian architect Christian de Portzamparc and the Berlin architect Steffen Lehmann . A design statute has been in force at Pariser Platz since 1994 . The concept goes back to Josef Paul Kleihues and is symbolized as the core point of the design statutes on Pariser Platz by his Haus Sommer and Haus Liebermann. The building of the French Embassy follows these principles through the adhered eaves edge and the accentuated plinth. However, the division into three zones is not strictly carried out, which helps to loosen up the square. The embassy building has entrances on Pariser Platz and Wilhelmstrasse ; the latter usually serves as a visitor entrance. In between, the L-shaped structure extends in a block; The "Rue de France" runs through it as a connection between Wilhelmstrasse and Pariser Platz.
