History of the diplomatic missions in Germany

GDR and Vietnam

The GDR and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 1955.

The Vietnamese embassy was based in Berlin-Karlshorst at what was then Treskowallee 105 until 1969 (from 1961: Hermann-Duncker-Straße 89). 1969–1990 the embassy resided in the Hermann-Duncker-Strasse 125 building. The embassy employees maintained cultural and political contacts with many companies in the GDR and, among other things, ensured that brigades were given names of honor . The name of President Ho Chi Minh was requested and approved particularly frequently .

FRG and Vietnam

On September 23, 1975, Vietnam established diplomatic relations with what was then the Federal Republic of Germany .

After the fall of the Wall, relations between the two countries intensified, the two embassies in Germany were merged and were looking for a new seat in the German capital.

There were several mutual visits by high-ranking politicians, and relations in the fields of trade and culture, education, research and the environment were steadily improved.

The Vietnamese embassy and the federal government had agreed on 2010 as the year of Vietnamese-German culture on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the diplomatic treaties. There was the Vietnam Year in Germany and the Germany Year 2010 in Vietnam. In August, among other things, the Vietnam Culture Festival took place on Berlin's Alexanderplatz .

The embassy is the main point of contact for the concerns of around 200,000 Vietnamese living in Germany, including those with German passports. She also works closely with the Vietnamese Consulate General in Frankfurt am Main .

In connection with the kidnapping of the Vietnamese businessman Trinh Xuan Thanh, former CEO of a state construction company, from Germany in 2017, for which a political background was suspected, the German authorities expelled employees of the Vietnamese embassy from Germany. This incident put a heavy strain on bilateral relations, which had been good up until then.

History of buildings

1955 to 1969

The Vietnamese embassy in the GDR was initially located at Treskowallee 105 / corner Godesberger Straße (after renumbering in 1961: No. 89), where now (as of 2020) there is a hotel and a restaurant.

1969 to 1990

The multi-family house at Hermann-Duncker-Straße 125 (since 1992 Treskowallee again ) was the seat of the embassy from 1969. After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the house was re-privatized and renovated. Now (as of 2020) there is a dental and a law practice here.

Since 1991

The house at Elsenstrasse 3, which has been rented as an embassy building by the city of Berlin since 1991 and built in the 19th century, is a listed building.

Master plumber Max Wünsche had this house built in 1889/1890 according to plans by the architect Carl Kneifel . In 1900, Wünsche appears with the entry Privatier as the owner (= E ) of the building at Elsenstrasse 3.

The three-storey building is clad with a light sandstone facade. The individual floors are optically separated from each other by a double-run cornice . The facade on the first floor is structured by strict horizontal lines, which are loosened up by a large balcony. This design language cannot be found on the second floor. Rather, a pilaster structure is indicated here by vertically arranged squares . The five windows on the upper floor are each adorned by a risalit .
