history

From 1912 the seat of the Swedish legation was at Tiergartenstrasse 36. During the Second World War , most of the embassy building was destroyed in the Allied air raids on November 22, 1943. Therefore, the Swedish embassy moved to Altdöbern Castle, 120 kilometers away - in Berlin only one contact office remained on Rauchstrasse 25 . The embassy staff remained in Germany until the end of the war and were only evacuated on May 18, 1945.

From 1948 a consul general resided in West Berlin . In 1950 an ambassador was sent to Bonn . In East Berlin , the Embassy of Sweden in 1972 was East Germany established. Its headquarters were in Otto-Grotewohl-Strasse 3a (now: Wilhelmstrasse 66) in Berlin-Mitte .

With the relocation of the seat of government , the Swedish embassy moved from Bonn ( entry in the embassy list ) to Berlin in 1999 . Today's embassy is located on the edge of the Great Zoo , where the Swedish embassy was already before the Second World War. The new building was built in 1997–1999 and is one of the five embassies that together make up the Nordic embassies. The architect of the Swedish Embassy is Gert Wingårdh . The interior is characterized by birch wood walls and copper details and the staircase. The embassy has three floors with a view of the Klingelhöferstrasse . The outer walls are made of limestone from Gotland and black diabase from Emmaboda . The building is managed by the State Works for Real Estate ( SFV ).

The ambassador's residence is located at Pücklerstraße 42/44 in Dahlem in the Villa Ehrenfeucht , designed by Wilhelm von Gumbertz-Rohnthal , built in 1936 and converted from 1998–1999 , which surrounds a garden designed by landscape architect Herta Hammerbacher .
