The Embassy of Georgia in the Federal Republic of Germany is located in the Berlin district of Tiergarten of the district center in the smoke Straße 11 . tasks

The embassy is a place of representation and serves in particular to maintain bilateral relations between the Caucasian country of Georgia and the Federal Republic of Germany . Through its staff, the embassy represents the interests of Georgia and its citizens in Germany, negotiates with the government of the receiving state, endeavors to promote friendly relations between the two states and to expand their economic, cultural and scientific cooperation. If necessary, the consular department of the embassy will issue travel documents to interested business people, students or tourists.

The embassy has a consulate general in Frankfurt am Main (address: Bockenheimer Landstrasse 97-99) for the federal states of Hesse , Saarland , North Rhine-Westphalia , Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia . Consul General is Ioseb Chkhikvishvili. There is also an honorary consulate in Munich (address: Ottostraße 13) for the district of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg with the honorary consul Claus Hipp . Consul Zakaria Megrelishvili in Munich, Luisenstrasse 43, performs consular duties for Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

history

The first Democratic Republic of Georgia , which was proclaimed on May 26, 1918, already had relations with the German Reich . Jason Bakradze was sent to Berlin in 1918 as a representative of the Georgian government. On September 24, 1920, Germany recognized the independence of Georgia and diplomatic relations were contractually regulated at the state level. The German ambassador to Georgia was Ulrich Rauscher in December 1920 , while Vladimir Akhmeteli took on the duties of the embassy in Germany . The Georgian legation was located at Brückenallee 31 in Berlin-Tiergarten (overbuilt after the Second World War).

After the annexation of Georgia by Russia and its incorporation into the USSR , diplomatic relations with foreign countries continued for a while, but ended in 1922. This ended the first official phase of German-Georgian relations, which was only to change after 70 years with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

On April 13, 1992, the establishment of diplomatic relations between the reunified Germany and Georgia, which had regained its independence in 1991, was contractually agreed after Germany recognized Georgia's independence in March 1992.

After this contract and taking into account that the seat of government of the Federal Republic was relocated to Berlin, representatives of the state looked around for a suitable property. For the time being they moved into a villa at Pankower Heinrich-Mann-Straße 32. However, the house was not suitable as a permanent residence. In 2010, the Georgian state acquired the premises of the listed building at Rauchstrasse 11, Berlin-Tiergarten . It was the former Norwegian Embassy , which opened in 1940 and was built according to plans by the architects Otto von Estorff and Gerhard Winkler . After appropriate renovation work, the embassy moved into its new rooms in the same year (2010). The rest of the house is designed as an office and commercial building.
