architecture

The Mauritanian Embassy is located in the former Volk und Wissen publishing house

Construction of the Volk und Wissen publishing house began before the Second World War. The U-shaped floor plan of the building was due to its location on Kommandantenstrasse, what was then Lindenstrasse and Beuthstrasse. Six floors with a basement were planned, whereby the sixth floor with the attic was to be set back from the main facade, but the building was not completed due to the war. After the end of the Second World War , building was gradually continued. The building had been in the border area between East and West Berlin since 1961 , with the wing on Kommandantenstrasse even reaching into the border strip on the Berlin Wall . A remnant of the border signal fence has been preserved on the building.

The publishing house Volk und Wissen took over the building as owner in 1952 and continued the building in 1953 with the completion of the first and second floors. By 1958, the construction of the side wing on Beuthstrasse was completed up to the fourth floor. This wing was not completed until 1975 by the architect Werner Ebel .

After German reunification , the facade of the building was redesigned in 1994 by Waldemar Poreike (1927–2014), whereby the central five axes were slightly arched to emphasize the portal area. Above the fourth floor, a cornice was also drawn, which was made stronger in the central area.
