The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Berlin ( Korean : 주 독일 대한민국 대사관) is the headquarters of the diplomatic mission of South Korea in Germany. It is located in the Tiergarten district of Berlin at Stülerstraße 10 in the embassy district on the edge of the Großer Tiergarten .
History and Development
As early as 1883, a trade, friendship and shipping treaty was concluded between the then German Empire and the Korean Empire , and embassies were opened in both capitals. As a result of the warlike and political developments up to the middle of the 20th century, relations remained interrupted. From 1953 there was a new diplomatic agreement with the Federal Republic of Germany . It developed from a consulate to an embassy (from 1958) and has continued to be successful ever since.
South Korea's first embassy was located in Remagen , followed by a move to Cologne and, from 1958, to the federal quarter in Bonn . There have been multiple moves in this city, since 2014 the branch office in Bonn has had the address Godesberger Allee 142–148.
Korea had bought building space in the embassy district in Berlin-Tiergarten . A new embassy building was opened here in 2006 based on a design by the architects Braun & Schlockermann and Partners . It was mainly made of concrete and has several traditional references to Korean architecture. For the facade were sand-lime brick and Jura marble with brass cartridges used. In front of the entrance on Stülerstraße, a buddy bear designed by the Korean artist Seo greets visitors.
Jong Bum-goo has been the ambassador since January 2018.
In Munich and Düsseldorf there were consulates as branches of the embassy, now Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg are named as consulates general (Frankfurt: Lyoner Str. 34, Hamburg: Kaiser-Wilhelm-Str. 9).
