The Embassy of the Philippines is the diplomatic representation of the Republic of the Philippines in the Federal Republic of Germany with its seat at Luisenstrasse 16 in Berlin . The representation has existed since 1954 and was initially located in the then federal capital Bonn . In the GDR there was an embassy in East Berlin between 1974 and 1990 .

history

On October 8, 1954, the Philippines and the Federal Republic of Germany established diplomatic relations. In the 1980s, the embassy was located at Maximilanstrasse 28b in Bonn . There the future ambassador Delia Domingo-Albert was the ambassador's deputy between 1984 and 1990.

On December 21, 1973, the Philippines and the GDR agreed to establish diplomatic relations and set up embassies in their respective capitals. The headquarters of the embassy was the then East Berlin Otto-Grotewohl-Strasse 3a (since 1993: Wilhelmstrasse 66). Until the end of the GDR, the embassies of Afghanistan , Greece , Pakistan , Portugal , Sweden , Zimbabwe and Zaire were located in the same building .

After German reunification and the capital decision , the Philippine Embassy operated a branch in the Uhlandstraße 97 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf , a founder time -Wohnhaus with former eleven apartments.

The former embassy building in Bonn served for some time as a branch office of the embassy, the head there in 2008 was Thomas Q. Auxilian. The facility in Bonn was given up for reasons of rationalization.

In November 2015, the embassy first moved into its capital city on Kurfürstendamm 194 in Berlin. In January 2019, the company moved to the Mitte district at Luisenstrasse 16.

The plot at Charitéstrasse 7 with an area of around 400 square meters had been vacant since the end of the Second World War. With the construction of the embassy building, it was given the address Luisenstrasse 16. The seven-story building was built in 2017-2018 and inaugurated on February 18, 2019. It was created according to plans by the Berlin architect Florian Hoyer , the construction was carried out by the Zielconcept Group. The construction costs amounted to eleven million euros .

The building offers 1400 square meters of floor space . The top floor is a conference floor, the ground floor was connected to the basement and forms a large reception and event hall, the Bulwagan Pilipino . Because of its location on a sloping street corner, there are hardly any right angles in the house, while the courtyard is loosely designed with open spaces.

Working method, organization

The Philippine diplomats in Berlin coordinate the political, economic, scientific and cultural relations between the Philippines and Germany. The embassy also organizes its own events, for example concerts with Filipino and German artists or a Christmas party with Filipinos living in Germany (in Berlin there were 847 people in 2007, 22,107 Filipino citizens throughout Germany in the same year) Filipino religious communities in Germany (in 2008 there were a total of 6) and looks after former scholarship holders who contribute to the growth of mutual relations after their stay in Germany in their home country. The embassy staff also help German tourists with the planning and implementation of trips to the island state.

The Philippines maintain a consulate general in Frankfurt am Main as well as honorary consulates in Essen , Pullach and Stuttgart . They are subordinate to the embassy in Berlin and act on their behalf, especially in matters relating to citizens from the Philippines.

The embassy staff consists of around 25 people.
