The Canadian Embassy in Berlin is Canada's diplomatic mission in Germany. It is located at Leipziger Platz 17 in Berlin district of Mitte .

history

Before the Second World War there was no Canadian representation on German soil. At the time of the division of Germany, there was a Canadian embassy in Bonn , which was closed in 1999 (→  entry in embassy list ). Canada was not represented in East Berlin . Contacts with the GDR were made through the Canadian embassy in Warsaw . After the government's move of the Bundestag and Bundesrat , the Canadian Embassy moved its headquarters to the new German capital. Since a suitable representative office was not yet available at the time of the move, it temporarily moved to the International Trade Center at Friedrichstrasse station .

The Visa Department of the Canadian Embassy was closed at the end of April 2012 and has been in Vienna since then .

On April 29, 2005, the new embassy building was inaugurated, which is intended to represent Canada as an open country. It was built inexpensively in a public private partnership with Canada Haus KG based on designs by the architectural team Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg (KPMB, Toronto ), Gagnon Letellier Cyr ( Quebec ) and Smith Carter ( Winnipeg ). Before that, there was an international architectural competition in which 42 projects were submitted. The winning design shows architectural influences from various Canadian provinces, especially inside the building. The building materials, the floor plan and the height of the building are strictly based on the specifications made for Leipziger Platz.

In contrast to many other embassies, the facility has several publicly accessible rooms, including a multimedia room, in which interested parties can find a wealth of information on the country's history, economy and culture. In addition, the Nordwestpassage runs right through the building , which connects Leipziger Platz with Ebertstrasse at the Lenné triangle and is open to pedestrians.

Quebec

The provincial government of Quebec also has its own representations in Berlin and Munich , responsible for the Federal Republic, Austria and Switzerland . They promote the interests of the province in the areas of institutional cooperation, economy, culture and media. The representation in Berlin is at Pariser Platz , next to the French embassy. A constantly raised flag of Quebec marks the house.
