The International Trade Center ( IHC ) is a high-rise construction in the Berlin district of Mitte . It is located on the square between Georgenstrasse , Planckstrasse , Dorotheenstrasse and Friedrichstrasse and is 93.5 meters high, spread over 25 floors.
The IHZ was designed by the director of the East Berlin construction management , Erhardt Gißke , in the 1970s. It was built between 1976 and 1978; Project planning and execution were carried out by the Japanese Kajima Corporation . The building is particularly striking because of its two large, black window areas, which are surrounded by a white windowless frame. The floor plan is rectangular.

Up until the year 2000, there was a plinth building on the side facing Friedrichstrasse, which was three floors high and which contained restaurants and shops until the demolition. It was demolished to make way for two 35-meter-high extensions that now contain apartments, offices and hotels. The building complex also includes a car park with 600 parking spaces. In 2003, a large company logo of the car manufacturer Opel was placed on the roof of the skyscraper, which was removed again in 2012 when the Opel showroom was closed.
The entire building has always housed offices for law firms, trading companies - including the arms exporter Imes Import-Export GmbH of the foreign exchange procurer Alexander Schalck-Golodkowski from 1982 -, airlines, etc. Embassies were already present in the building during the GDR era . In order to bridge the time until the establishment of a separate embassy residence, the Dutch embassy was located in the international trade center between 1999 and March 2004 and the Canadian embassy between 1999 and April 2005 .
A total of 135 companies from over 15 countries are currently represented.
