Roman Umiastowski (born February 10, 1893 in Warsaw , † December 29, 1982 in London ) was a Polish colonel and military historian . He also published science fiction under the pseudonym Bolesław Żarnowiecki .

Life

Roman Umiastowski attended high school in Warsaw and served in the First World War in the Tsarist Russian army . In 1922/23 he attended the War Academy in Warsaw and graduated as an officer of the General Staff. He became Chief of Staff of the Deputy Inspector of the 1st Army under Division General Edward Rydz-Śmigły .

In 1928 Umiastowski became a lecturer at the War Academy. In November 1928 he was appointed Chief of Staff to lead the 3rd Infantry Division in Zamość . In September 1930 he was transferred to the battalion commander of the Infantry Regiment in Pinsk . In March 1932 he was transferred to the 28th regiment in Łódź as deputy regimental commander . From September 1937 to March 1939 he commanded the 37th Infantry Regiment in Kutno .

During the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, he was head of propaganda on the Supreme Commander's staff. On September 6, 1939, shortly before midnight, he radioed the Warsaw residents to take part in the construction of barricades and fortifications against the Germans' immediate threat to the city. At the same time he urged all men who can carry arms and who have not yet been drafted into the army to leave the capital immediately and go east, where they should be mobilized. The appeal caused great panic, which is why Umiastowski had to resign from the post of head of propaganda.

After the collapse of the Polish resistance, Umiastowski emigrated to England via France, where he published analyzes of military history.

His son was killed in the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944 .

Umiastowski later became an antiquarian and collected old prints, engravings and maps. His collection is now in the Rapperswil Poland Museum in Switzerland.
