Velázquez is an impact crater on the planet Mercury .
It is located in the so-called Victoria Quadrangle and has an average diameter of 128 kilometers. The Victoria Quadrangle is characterized by a high density of craters and very old surface material. The closest crater with proper names is the only a few kilometers to the west, 206 kilometers in diameter and barely pronounced, so probably older, Hugo crater .
The Velázquez crater is almost circular. The curve of its northwest side is flattened. A small impact crater is on its northwestern rim. On the crater floor there are so-called hollows , which are considered relatively young due to their lighter appearance and in which an occurrence of magnesium sulfide or a combination of magnesium sulfide and calcium sulfide is suspected.
In 1979 it was named after the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez (approx. 1599; † 1660).
