Mónica Puig (born September 27, 1993 in San Juan ) is a Puerto Rican tennis player . Her greatest success so far was winning the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

Career

Puig, who started playing tennis at the age of six, prefers the hard court for her game. Already as a junior she attracted attention when she reached the quarterfinals of the junior women's competition at the French Open and US Open in 2010 and won the title at the renowned Porto Alegre Junior Championships and moved up to second place in the junior world rankings. In the same year she won the gold medal in singles at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayagüez . In 2011, she reached the final at the French Open , where she lost to Ons Jabeur in two sets, her best result on the junior tour. Before that, she won her first titles on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in tournaments in the $ 25,000 category in Surprise and from qualifying in Chiasso . In total, she has won seven ITF individual titles so far.

In 2012, Puig competed in Melbourne for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament for women, but failed there in the second round. Then she qualified in Monterrey for the first time for the main round of a WTA tournament, but lost in the first round to Lourdes Domínguez Lino . At the end of the year, which she spent mostly on the ITF tour, she won her first ITF title in the $ 50,000 category in Joué-lès-Tours , followed by her first triumph in a $ 100,000 tournament in Poitiers the following week -Category followed. At the beginning of the 2013 season she succeeded in the first WTA tournament of the year in Brisbane from qualifying against Olivia Rogowska, her first victory on the women's tour; in the second round she only lost to Angelique Kerber in the tie- break of the third set. After four missed attempts from qualifying, she was in the peloton for the first time at the French Open and immediately reached the third round after victories against Nadja Petrowa and Madison Keys , in which she lost to Carla Suárez Navarro . Things went even better for Puig at Wimbledon , where she achieved her best Grand Slam result to date by reaching the fourth round. The success against Sara Errani in the first round was also her first win against a top 10 player. Thanks to the good results, Puig also managed to get into the top 50, which entitled her to start in the main draw of most of the major WTA tournaments.

After weaker results in early 2014, she won her first and only WTA title at the Internationaux de Strasbourg 2014 as an unseeded player. She remained without a set loss for the entire duration of the tournament and defeated the Spanish qualifier Sílvia Soler Espinosa 6: 4 and 6: 3 in the final . At the US Open , Puig also made it into the second round for the first time, where she narrowly failed to Andrea Petković . At the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz in 2014 , she defended her individual title in the final against the two-seeded Mexican Ana Sofía Sánchez . In 2015, Puig's performance stagnated, which only survived the first round of a Grand Slam at the Australian Open , which is why she only just finished the season in the top 100 of the world rankings with a negative annual balance sheet.

In 2016, the Puerto Rican played her best season by far. So she reached the final of the WTA tournament in Sydney as a qualifier after successes against Samantha Stosur and Belinda Bencic in January , where she only had to admit defeat to Svetlana Kuznetsova . At the Grand Slam tournaments in Paris and London she moved into the third round and in Eastbourne , again out of qualification, into the round of the last four in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Dominika Cibulková . However, Puig experienced her career high point at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , where, after successes over the world-class players Garbiñe Muguruza and Petra Kvitová , she prevailed in the semi-finals in the final against Angelique Kerber 6: 4, 4: 6 and 6: 1 and thus won Olympic gold. For Puerto Rico it was the first ever gold medal and the first medal for a female athlete. Although for the first time no world ranking points were awarded for the Olympic tennis tournament , Puig achieved her highest career ranking in September with position 27.

In the following year, she did not succeed in building on the results of the Olympic season. In none of the four Grand Slam tournaments did she survive the second round and fell out of the top 50 in the world rankings. She achieved her best result of the season in Luxembourg at the last WTA tournament of the year, where, after another victory in the opening match against Kerber, she advanced into her last final on the WTA Tour, in which she lost to Carina Witthöft 3: 6 and 5: 7 .

In 2018, Puig surprised in Miami with a win over Caroline Wozniacki and reaching the fourth round, in which she lost to qualifier Danielle Collins . She had to cancel her participation in the French Open due to a hip injury. Upon her return to the tour in Wimbledon , she presented herself in changeable shape with its by reaching the semifinals of the Connecticut Open in 2018 had to give up in New Haven, where she injured against Suarez Navarro, as well as reaching the quarter-finals of Wuhan reach notable successes . At the end of July 2018, after 2010 and 2014, she won the individual gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games . In the final, Mariana Duque Mariño defeated her 6-1 and 6-1. In doubles she won the bronze medal on the side of Mónica Matías . In 2019, the Puerto Rican only showed her talent sporadically. In Charleston, for example, after successes over Sara Errani and Aryna Sabalenka , she made it to the semifinals without losing a set, but there was no chance against the eventual winner Madison Keys . At the French Open she reached the third round for the third time after 2013 and 2016, in which she again failed in three sets against Iga Świątek . Despite persistent form weakness, she finished her seventh season in a row in the top 100 of the world rankings in 2019.

At the end of 2019, Puig had an operation on her right elbow in New York, which is why she could not start at the 2020 Australian Open .

Since 2008, Mónica Puig has also played in 28 games for the Puerto Rican Fed Cup team ; of her total of 44 games she was able to win 30 (individual balance: 22: 5).
