The Fürstenwalde hunting lodge is a baroque building in the city of Fürstenwalde / Spree . The castle, located near the Spree , was built for King Friedrich I of Prussia .

history

Friedrich I had the palace built between 1699 and 1700 by the then court architect Martin Grünberg . Among other things, he was entrusted with the renovation of the Grunewald hunting lodge . In addition to the castle itself, various ancillary buildings such as a fishing house, an avenue , a carp pond and a pleasure garden were created. It should be used for hunts and as a starting point for visits to the estates in Golzow .

It is not known to what extent the castle was actually used for these purposes. After the death of Frederick I in 1713, the castle fell into disrepair and was now empty. After a city fire, the city administration quartered citizens who had become homeless there at its own discretion. A workshop was also established at this time. In 1736 a garrison commander also set up his apartment there.

In 1750 the city was banned from this illegal use and at the behest of Frederick II the castle was converted into a granary for the military. For this, a false ceiling and were draws inserted and unzweckdienliche elements such as the grand staircase and the Lustgarten removed. In 1795 another granary was built at right angles to the castle. After the Second World War , the castle served as a warehouse until 1993. Since then, it has been privately owned and placed under a preservation order, unused and empty.

On the occasion of Fürstenwald's application for the 2013 State Garden Show , a renovation of the building was discussed, but was rejected. In the course of a foreclosure auction, the city of Fürstenwalde acquired the castle and the warehouse on September 18, 2013. The reconstruction of the buildings and the preparation of the open spaces are planned if the use has not yet been determined. In 2016 it became known that a university for gastronomy and tourism would be founded in Fürstenwalde at the earliest from the 2019/20 school year . In future, theoretical training will take place in the premises of the advanced school, while practical training will take place in the premises of the hunting lodge that has been converted into a hotel.

architecture

The hunting lodge is a two-story baroque single-wing building with 13 window axes under a hipped roof . The exterior is accentuated by a three-axis central riser with a triangular gable and is otherwise kept simple. Originally there was a large central hall, but this is no longer there due to the false ceilings that were later added.
