Silviano Santiago
Silviano Santiago (born September 29, 1936 in Formiga , Minas Gerais ) is a Brazilian writer.
In 1975 he edited an anthology of prose and poetry by Ariano Suassunas and the annotated edition of Iracema . The following year he took part in the X Festival de Inverno of Ouro Preto . In 1981 his compositionally and stylistically outstanding novel Em Liberdade came out, which plays on two time levels.
In 1985 he published his translations of the poems of Jacques Prévert . Ten years later he translated Por Que Amo Barthes by Alain Robbe-Grillet . He was appointed a member of the jury of the 1989 National Literature Prize by the Brazilian Minister of Culture.
In 1994 he helped Heloísa Buarque de Hollanda and her team to set up the Programa Avançado de Cultura Contemporânea (PACC). The following year he took part in the II Encontro Internacional de Poetas at the Universidade de Coimbra .
In 1996 he took part in the conference on the project on the literary history of Latin America in Toronto. Heranças (“Inheritance”), a fictional approach to the 20th century , was published in 2008 .
To date, Santiago has received the Prêmio Jabuti de Literatura three times. In 2013 the Academia Brasileira de Letras awarded him Brazil’s most important literary prize Prêmio Machado de Assis for his complete works .
