Emil Ciocoiu (born September 13, 1948 in Șasa near Târgu Jiu , Romania ; † August 1, 2020 in Aachen ) was a Romanian painter .

Live and act

After graduating from high school Ciocoiu studied from 1968 to 1974 Fine Art at the Institute of Fine Arts " Nicolae Grigorescu " in Bucharest . He then deepened his studies with the support of a “ Theodor Aman Scholarship” and in 1976 became a member of the “Union of Romanian Artists”.

Because of the political situation under Nicolae Ceaușescu , Ciocoiu resigned from the artist association and left Romania in 1980. He moved to Aachen, where he built his own studio and in 1983 he joined the Federal Association of Visual Artists . In the following decades Ciocoiu gained international recognition with his works and received invitations to numerous European exhibitions.

An affair of the heart for Ciocoiu after the Romanian Revolution of 1989 was contacting his home country in order to contribute to Romania's cultural influence in the world after the upheaval in the country. In 2008 he was then given permission for a traveling exhibition in Romania with his own works, which stopped in several important galleries and in the central library of the University of Bucharest . In the same year an invitation to Paris followed for an exhibition on contemporary Romanian painting under the auspices of the Romanian Embassy in France and the Romanian Cultural Institute in Paris . This event was organized by the Taylor Foundation and the Soleil de l'Est association and brought together 43 contemporary Romanian painters. Two years later, the Romanian Embassy in Berlin organized an exhibition of Ciocoius' works in the embassy building as well as in the Royal Gallery in Peleș Castle in Sinaia .

Since 2010 Ciocoiu has belonged to the group of internationally known Romanian artists who regularly took part in the “Zarva Festival” in De Kopermolen in the Dutch town of Vaals .

Ciocoiu died on August 1, 2020 in Aachen and found his final resting place in the Aachen forest cemetery . He was married to the Romanian Rodica-Daniela Ciocoiu, violinist in the Aachen Symphony Orchestra .
