Nicolae Grigorescu

Nicolae Ion Grigorescu (born May 15, 1838 in Pitaru near Bucharest ; † July 21, 1907 in Câmpina ) was a Romanian painter and, along with Mittefan Luchian and Ion Andreescu, is one of the founders of modern Romanian painting. His later work shows impressionistic influences. He often looked for his subjects in Romanian rural everyday life at the end of the 19th century.

Life

After his family moved to Bucharest after the death of his father in 1843 , Grigorescu became a student of the Banat-born Czech painter Anton Chladek (1794-1882) at an early age (1848–1850 ). He worked in Wallachia , where he painted church frescoes and boyar portraits. So Grigorescu also started to paint Romanian Orthodox churches and monasteries . a. in Băicoi , Agapia Monastery , Zamfira Monastery or Căldărușani Monastery .

In 1861 he received a scholarship in Paris through the mediation of Mihail Kogălniceanu , where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts . He also visited Sébastien Cornu's atelier , where his classmate Pierre-Auguste Renoir was. But soon he felt attracted to the Barbizon School , left the studio and went to Barbizon , where he devoted himself to outdoor painting and came into contact with the emerging Impressionism. In the years 1873/1874 he toured Italy, Greece and Austria. In 1877, during the Romanian War of Independence , he was called to accompany the Romanian army to the front in order to work as a front draftsman and painter.

His works were u. a. Exhibited at the 1867 World's Fair and the 1889 World's Fair.

From 1879 to 1890 he lived and worked mainly in France, especially in Vitré and Paris. In 1890 he moved back to Romania , where he died in Câmpina in 1907 . Most of his work, consisting mainly of oil paintings, is now in Bucharest art museums.
