Ion Andreescu (born February 15, 1850 in Bucharest ; † October 22, 1882 there ) is one of the most famous Romanian impressionist painters .

biography

Andreescu came from a wealthy family of merchants in Bucharest. In 1869 he entered Theodor Aman's art college, from which he graduated with a diploma. In 1872 he became a teacher of drawing and calligraphy at the beschöfliche school in Buzau . In 1873 he left again to teach first at the local Tudor-Vladimirescu-Gymnasium and later, in 1875, at the craft school. In 1878 he traveled to Paris to continue his education there at the Académie Julian . In the summer he painted together with the members of the Barbizon School , where he met his great role model Nicolae Grigorescu for the first time . In 1881 he returned to his hometown Bucharest, suffering from tuberculosis , where he died the following year.

Although his works were exhibited alongside those of Claude Monet , Édouard Manet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir , his life was marked by poverty and a lack of recognition. He suffered from health problems at an early age, so that he only realized his gift of artistic expression and painting late. This also explains his extensive, creative work, which with its maturity does not allow indecision and does not depend on the need to research. Despite his position as an art teacher in the countryside, he feverishly began painting new pictures. This attitude did not go with his calm demeanor as a young man living alone. For him, art was a way to express oneself, sublime and without boasting. He always showed his great talent at work, so that his art was manageable, but immense in its expression. Andreescu never stood apart from other Romanian artists, although he was more inspired by the art of western Europe, which earned him a special position in Romanian art history . As he neared the end of his stay in France, the impression of his paintings became even clearer, using a variety of colors and matching them in a way that only a great artist of his time could have done.

The French art critic Jacques Lassaigne said of him: “Among the multitude of Romanian artists, you can certainly not find anyone whose personality is more attractive and whose life has more to tell than that of Ion Andreescu. He definitely influenced Romanian art history. "
