Carl Lotus Becker
Carl Lotus Becker (born September 7, 1873 in Waterloo , Iowa , † April 10, 1945 in Ithaca , New York ) was an American historian and university professor .
biography
After attending school, he first studied at the University of Wisconsin and graduated in 1896 with a Bachelor of Letters (B.Litt.) . After a postgraduate study at Columbia University , which he finished with a Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.), He was first teacher of history and political science at Pennsylvania State College in 1899 and then professor at Dartmouth College in 1901 . This was followed by a professorship at the University of Kansas from 1902 to 1916 .
In the meantime he acquired a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) at the University of Wisconsin in 1907 with a dissertation on The History of Political Parties in the Province of New York . Most recently, after a subsequent brief position as professor for the history of Europe at the University of Minnesota from 1917 until his retirement in 1941, he was professor at Cornell University .
He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (elected in 1923), the American Academy of Arts and Letters (elected in 1933) and the American Historical Association , of which he was president from 1931 to 1932. He was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society since 1936.
