Vânju Mare or Vînju Mare [ ˈvɨnʒu mare ] is a small town in the Mehedinți district in Romania .

location

Vânju Mare is located in Little Wallachia , about 15 km east of the Danube, which flows south here . The district capital Drobeta Turnu Severin is located about 30 km northwest.

history

Archaeological finds in the region date from the Stone , Bronze and Iron Ages . Vânju Mare was mentioned for the first time in 1772, the incorporated town of Orevița Mare as early as 1652. The settlement was favored by fertile soils. In 1968 the place was declared a city. The main line of business in Vânju Mare is agriculture, particularly viticulture.

population

The 2002 census counted 6590 inhabitants, including 6838 Romanians and 101 Roma . About 3800 lived in Vânju Mare itself, the rest in the four incorporated villages.

Vânju Mare has no rail connection. The national road Drum național 56A runs through the city from Drobeta-Turnu Severin to Calafat . There are regular bus connections to Drobeta Turnu Severin and Calafat.
