Helge Sodan

Helge Sodan (born February 7, 1959 in West Berlin ) is a German legal scholar and professor of constitutional and administrative law, public commercial law and social law at the Free University of Berlin and chairman of the board and director of the German Institute for Health Law .

From 2000 to 2007 he was President of the Constitutional Court of the State of Berlin .

Life

Helge Sodan obtained the general university entrance qualification at the Canisius College in Berlin in 1977 . In 1982 he passed the first state examination in law and the second state examination in 1988 . In 1987 he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD at the Free University of Berlin. From 1984 to 1996 Sodan was a research assistant or assistant at the Free University of Berlin, at the University of Hanover and at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 1996 he completed his habilitation at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and received the Venia legendi for constitutional and administrative law, social law and public commercial law. In the winter semester 1996/97 Sodan represented the then judge of the Federal Constitutional Court Udo Steiner at the University of Regensburg . In 1997 he was appointed professor (C4) at the Free University of Berlin with a chair in constitutional and administrative law, public commercial law and social law. From 1999 to 2001 Sodan was managing director of the Institute for Political Science, Constitutional and Administrative Law at the Free University of Berlin. Since 1997 he has also been chairman of the Joint Commission of the Faculties of Law and Economics at the Free University of Berlin. On March 9, 2000, he was elected President of the Constitutional Court of the State of Berlin by the Berlin House of Representatives. He held this office until the end of the seven-year term of office with the statutory exclusion of re-election in 2007. During this time, the Constitutional Court, under his leadership, declared the Berlin state budget for 2002/03 to be unconstitutional. He is a member of the CDU . After Michael Braun's dismissal at the end of 2011, Sodan was under discussion as the successor to the office of Senator for Justice and Consumer Protection of the State of Berlin.

Other functions and memberships

Sodan is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Walter Raymond Foundation of the Federal Union of German Employers' Associations . He is also a member of the selection committee and a liaison officer of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung e. V.
