Margret Diwell

Margret Diwell (born March 28, 1951 in Hamburg ) is a German lawyer. From 2007 to 2012 she was President of the Constitutional Court of the State of Berlin .

Life

After studying law, she completed her legal clerkship in Baden-Württemberg . From 1978 to 1986 she was employed as a member of the government at the Oberfinanzdirektion Berlin . In 1987 she was admitted to the bar and in 1992 admitted to the Berlin Higher Regional Court . In 1998 she qualified as a specialist lawyer for family law .

Margret Diwell was on the board of the German Association of Women Lawyers for many years , from 2001 to 2005 as its president. She was also an honorary judge at the Berlin Bar .

From 2004 to April 2007 she was already Vice President of the Berlin Constitutional Court. On April 26, 2007, at the suggestion of the SPD , she was elected by the Berlin House of Representatives to succeed Helge Sodan as the new president. The relevant electoral law, which previously did not allow an incumbent member of the Court of Justice to be elected President, was specially amended for the election. 132 MPs voted for, eight against Diwell, four abstained. Their term of office is four years and re-election is not possible.

Margret Diwell is a member of the SPD. She is married to Lutz Diwell and has three children.
