Nicolae Buicliu

Nicolae Buicliu (born September 6, 1906 in Corabia , Romania , † April 18, 1974 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian composer and music teacher .

Live and act

Nicolae Buicliu comes from an Armenian family. He attended schools in Corabia and Caracal and obtained the Baccalauréat in Craiova in 1925 . He then studied philology at the University of Bucharest and graduated in aesthetics . At the same time he studied harmonics and counterpoint with Alfonso Castaldi , form theory and orchestration with Demetrius Cuclin and music history with Constantin Brăiloiu at the National Music University in Bucharest from 1926 to 1934 . After graduating, he worked from 1935 to 1946 as a music teacher in Călărași ; During this time he studied from 1937 to 1938 in Paris at the École César-Franck with Albert Bertelin and Guy de Lioncourt . From 1946 to 1949 he was a music teacher at the Bucharest Music School.

From 1949 until his death he was professor of counterpoint at the National Music University in Bucharest. His students include Felicia Donceanu , Smaranda Oțeanu-Bunea , George Draga and Petru Stoianov . 1952-1954 he was editor of the Romanian composer association Uniunea Compozitorilor şi din România Muzicologilor published magazine Muzica .

Nicolae Buicliu composed several symphonies (e.g. Rustica in A minor, 1940; A Republicii in F major, 1950), chamber and instrumental music (e.g. string quartet in G minor, 1933; festive overture, 1951; Quintet for wind instruments, 1951; violin concerto, 1958) and the lyrical opera Doamna Chiajna in three acts (finished in 1970), for which he also wrote the libretto together with the mezzo-soprano Elena Cernei based on a story by Alexandru Odobescu and which he wrote in 1973 in his presence Season opening at the Opera Națională Bucureşti was premiered.
