Pola Illéry (real name Paula Iliescu , married Gibson ; born December 18, 1909 in Corabia , Romania , † October 19, 1993 in Palos Verdes , California ) was a Romanian-French film actress .

Life

Pola Illéry was born in the Romanian port city of Corabia. She had her first film appearance in 1928 in the French silent film Le Désir . Although the petite, barely 1.50 m tall actress only played a minor role here, she caused a sensation with her exotic appearance. Shortly thereafter, she received the offer to take on a larger part in the adventure drama Le Capitaine Fracasse , directed by Alberto Cavalcanti . Her first sound film was the American-Romanian comedy Parada Paramount , made in 1930 , in which she appeared under her real name "Paula Iliescu". She chose the first name of her pseudonym because of her admiration for the film actress Pola Negri .

Through her participation in the triangular story Sous le toits de Paris , staged by René Clair , Illéry became known to a broad international audience that same year. In this film, which skilfully used the new sound film technology, she had taken on the female lead of the Romanian girl Pola. Then she received a number of other film offers. In 1933 she worked again with Clair in Quatorze Juillet . After La Rue sans nom (1934) Illéry's film career was effectively over. It was not until 1938 that she returned to the screen for the last time with the French versions of Richard Eichberg 's films, The Tiger of Eschnapur and The Indian Tomb .

In 1939 she emigrated to the United States. During the Second World War she worked as a nurse for the American Red Cross.

Pola Illéry, who took American citizenship in 1946, was married twice. Her first marriage to Major Charles Genier, whom she had met in Paris, and her second marriage to Jim Gibson.
