history

The place was first mentioned by Pope Alexander III. in a document dated April 23, 1179 to the Bishop of Volterra , Ugone, naming the place as the easternmost place of the diocese . The place is mentioned as Toclae Castrum . This was made in 1187 by Pope Urban III. approved. In 1202 Tocchi is mentioned as Castrum de Tocchi owned by the Ardengheschi (from Civitella ) and was under the government of Siena, which held a Podestà in the village until 1271 . Then the Senese family of the Tolomei ruled, who had the place administered by the brothers Naddo and Cione di Ranuccio Tolomei. In 1390, Tocchi was besieged and captured by Florence and then given to the Malavolti family. A year later, Siena occupied the place and destroyed the fortifications. The ruins and parts of the old city walls were then used for the houses that still exist today. Until 1821 there was still a documented church inside the Castello, mentioned in 1171, which is said to have been located near the entrance gate. There are no more traces of it today.
