history

The place was first mentioned in writing on March 28, 1108 by Bernardo di Montagutolo from Pari . He confirmed the monks of the Abbazia di San Lorenzo al Lanzo (Badia Ardenghesca) their possessions in the place, which were made for them by the Ardengheschi from Civitella . In the 12th century the place was still called San Lorenzo a Foiano , named after a place near the Mersebrücke, which is now called Ponte a Macereto . On April 17, 1194, Pope Celestine III renewed . confirmation of the possessions of the monks of the Abbazia di San Lorenzo al Lanzo, but only eight years later the place came under the control of Siena. In 1208 the place was sold to the Marescotti family from Senese . Due to the tolls on the road to Grosseto and the bad treatment of the local population, the Marescotti came into conflict with the government in Siena, so that Siena took the place on the night of June 7th to 8th 1369 and arrested Edoardo di Niccolò Marescotti . After that, the place belonged to Pari under civil law, then from 1579 to Sovicille . Casole d'Elsa was responsible for criminal law . In 1833 San Lorenzo a Merse became part of Monticiano.
