Castagneto Carducci is an Italian commune with 8954 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Livorno in the Tuscany region .

geography

The community extends over approx. 142 km². The districts include Bolgheri , Donoratico and Marina di Castagneto.

The neighboring municipalities are Bibbona , Monteverdi Marittimo (PI) , San Vincenzo , Sassetta and Suvereto . Castagneto Carducci is located in the Sassicaia wine region and has a stop on the Pisa – Rome railway line .

history

The place has been known since 754 AD. Originally it was called Castagneto della Gherardesca , named after the della Gherardesca family who ruled the place . Around 1848 it was renamed Castagneto Marittimo . In 1907 the municipality decided to rename itself Castagneto Carducci - in honor of the poet Giosuè Carducci , who spent his childhood in Bolgheri and Castagneto - but also in memory of his father, who worked as a surgeon in these places for a long time and was one of the most determined Was an opponent of feudal rights and acted as a protagonist in the period of bourgeois ferment that preceded the movements of 1848 and the associated first renaming of Castagnetos.
