San Severo is an Italian commune ( comune ) and city with 51,818 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia in the Apulia region .
The neighboring municipalities are Apricena , Foggia , Lucera , Rignano Garganico , San Marco in Lamis , San Paolo di Civitate and Torremaggiore .
history
San Severo was founded in the 11th century around a small church built by the Benedictine monks of Monte Cassino . The place quickly developed into an important trading city.
Since 1580 San Severo has been the seat of the diocese of San Severo , since 1579 the seat of the principality of Sansevero of the di Sangro family . In 1799, French troops captured the city.
In 1627, 1828 and 1851 earthquakes struck San Severo. During World War II , the city was the base of the United States Air Force between April 2, 1944 and March 3, 1945 .
