Mario Carli (born December 30, 1888 in San Severo , † September 9, 1935 in Rome ) was an Italian writer of futurism .

Life

Carli first appeared in public in 1907 with short stories and then in 1909 with a collection of novels. At this time he also joined a young group of authors, including Emilio Settimelli, Mario Chiti and the Ginanni-Corradini brothers. For their magazines La Difesa dell'Arte , Il Centauro and La Rivista , Carli writes many articles with echoes of symbolism . Through Settimelli and Ginna, Carli made contact with the Futurists in 1913. In 1915 he published his novel Retroscena , in which he radically broke with conventional narrative forms. From 1916 he worked for the magazine L'Italia futurista . During the war years he was also active as a journalist and politician and was involved with the Arditi (lone fighters), volunteered for military service in 1917, although he was incapable of doing so because of myopia. After the war he took part in the occupation of Fiume by Gabriele d'Annunzio . He then founded the paper “Roma Futurista” together with Marinetti , which became the political mouthpiece of Futurism. After Mussolini came to power , he became Consul General in Brazil with his official seat in Porto Alegre , and later Consul General in Saloniki (Greece). In his works he represents the conviction that life is meant to fully exhaust the energy it has been given and not to shy away from sacrifice and danger.
